Shaun Vlassis Wins By Innovating Threat Detection

In the latest episode of "Win: What's Important Now?" host Carrie Richardson sits down with Sean Vlassis, the innovative mind behind Illuminate Security. Fresh from his debut at RSA, Sean shared his journey from a seasoned security practitioner to a groundbreaking entrepreneur.

Sean’s passion for problem-solving and building is evident. He’s spent close to two decades in the detection and response space, shaping security capabilities at giants like Salesforce and JP Morgan. Yet, despite the industry's advancements, Sean felt the needle wasn’t moving fast enough in the fight against cyber threats.

This frustration led him to launch Illuminate Security and its pioneering Blue Hat platform. Drawing inspiration from the success of crowdsourcing in offensive security (think Bugcrowd and HackerOne), Sean applied this model to the defensive side. The result?

A crowdsourced threat hunting platform that anonymizes and secures customer data, allowing a vast network of detection engineers and threat hunters to do what they do best.

Starting a business isn’t without its challenges.

Sean candidly discussed the shift from a corporate environment with seemingly unlimited budgets to the scrappy, unpredictable world of startups. From managing finances to identifying the right target market, Sean has had to quickly adapt and learn.

One of the biggest hurdles has been educating potential clients about the value of a crowdsourced approach. It’s a novel concept, and Sean’s had to refine his messaging to convey that customers retain control over their data while gaining access to unparalleled expertise.

Despite the challenges, Sean remains optimistic.

Illuminate Security is already making waves, especially in high-stakes industries like defense, where their platform is providing more comprehensive threat coverage than ever before.

Sean’s journey from practitioner to entrepreneur highlights the importance of innovation and adaptability in cybersecurity. As Illuminate Security continues to grow, it’s clear that Sean’s problem-solving ethos is driving real change in the industry.
